Media self-regulation: Imperative of boosting capacities and reinforcing effectiveness

Reading time: 0 minute(s)

This analysis studies the state of self-regulation in the media sector in the Republic of North Macedonia, focusing on key ethics documents and the role of relevant bodies in this sphere – the Council of Media Ethics in Macedonia (CMEM), the Council of Honour at the Association of Journalists of Macedonia (AJM), and the Ethics Commission of the public service broadcaster MRT. The research includes a critical analysis of the capacities of the existing selfregulatory mechanisms, and of the challenges and good practices that arise from their operation, especially in the new digital environment.

The analysis indicates that there is a need for further strengthening of the human resources and of the financial and professional capacities of the selfregulatory bodies, in order to effectively tackle the challenges stemming from a changing media landscape.
